Convert Decimal to Fraction

Today we are going to talk about how to convert a decimal to a fraction. Converting from a decimal to a fraction is easy.

Decimal to Fraction

We will demonstrate how to convert decimals to fractions by using the example below. Let's try to convert 0.24, a decimal, to a fraction.

Convert decimal to fraction

The first thing we are going to do to convert from a decimal to a fraction is to write the decimal as a fraction of 1. That means 0.24 is the same as 0.24 divided by 1. After all, dividing any number by one does not change the number at all.

Now, we are going to multiply the right hand side by 100 divided by 100. And, since 100 divided by itself is infact one, it does not change the right hand side.

Converting decimal to fraction

So we have 0.24 x 100 on the top and 1 x 100 at the bottom of the right hand side, giving 24 on top and 100 at the bottom. 24/100 is a fraction which means we have succeeded in converting a decimal to a fraction.

However, most of the time you want the simplest fraction possible. 24 over 100 can be reduced or simplified further. For example, if you divide this fraction by 4 on the top as well as at the bottom, you will get 6/25 which is a simplified version of the original fraction.

That's it. To convert from a decimal to a fraction you just have to multiply the fraction by 100 over 100 and then simplify the fraction.
