today we are going to discuss how to add matrices. the first thing we are going to note is that matrix addition only works when you have metrices of the same dimensions. In another word, you can only add matrices with the same number of rows and the same number of columns.
These two matrices both have 2 rows and 2 columns so you can add them together.
Let's try another set of matrices.
The first matrix has 2 rows and the second also has 2 rows. But the first matrix has 1 column while the second one has two. So, this matrix addition won't work.
Another example is if you have a 2 by 2 matrix and a 2 by 3 matrix.
The number of columns arent the same so matrix addition wont work here either.
Now that we have established that, let's do some matrix addition.
Suppose we have these 2 matrices.
To add them, we simply add the numbers in the same position. So, here we add one and five, two and six, three nad zero and then 4 and 2.
Another example is this.
Here we add 3 and nine, and then 5 and 2.
We notice that if we are adding 2 by 1 matrices, we get a 2 by 1 matrix. The same goes for the previous 2 by 2 matrices example. When adding two 2 by 2 matrices we get another 2 by 2 matrix.
That was how to add matrices. For more information, visit math dash help dot info.
